Elliott lives on Santa Barbara’s Upper East Side, in a Craftsman bungalow that, in my imagination, is a lot like this one. A bungalow that her dad grew up in, back when he was a latchkey kid living with his working-class parents, but would now be well outside his price range.

“Long ago, Santa Barbara was beachy and funky—an artist’s community, or so her dad said. Now it was a weekend getaway for LA hipsters and a place celebrities and billionaires had enormous second (third? fourth?) homes. Chloe might be friendly and bubbly and a little too quick to rack up the credit card debt (Thanks, Daddy!) but make no mistake, this girl is razor sharp and honed in on exactly what’s going wrong in our patriarchal society.

“But as Chloe sat there listening to Celia Muñoz talk about sexual violence and women being believed, the “me too.” Movement started by Tarana Burke, the importance of consent, and the disproportionate violence against women and girls of color and trans people, Chloe couldn’t help thinking that schools should be having these discussions all the time. It should be baked into their curriculum from the very start. Growing up, girls got lectures that basically amounted to how to not get raped; maybe boys should get weekly trainings on how not to be a rapist.”

POV: It’s April 2019 and you’re three weeks po

POV: It’s April 2019 and you’re three weeks postpartum with your second child, a daughter whom you spent 5 long years enduring medical interventions in order to conceive. You have postpartum depression and anxiety, actually, though no one could tell it just by looking at you. There’s a lot of things they can’t tell just by looking at you, like the fact that you are currently outlining a book about witchcraft and revenge. Like the fact that you have personal reasons to want to write a book about witchcraft and revenge. A book that you will go on to write in the spring of 2021 during a global pandemic. A book that will go on to become your debut.

But not yet. For now you are sitting in your favorite coffee shop, thanking the universe for caffeine and Americanos, thanking the stars that this baby likes to sleep for hours in said coffee shop as long as she’s wrapped to your chest, and trying to thank every agent’s rejection email that graces your inbox for your last book (while you simultaneously outline your newest witchy book), because every no is getting you one step closer to a yes.
